Fan Vid Friday – The Best of Backstreet Boys

Posted by Kim and Sage

If you’re even a casual reader of this website, you’ll know that we are Boy Band Trash to our very core. Our love for cute boys singing catchy pop songs is in our blood, in our DNA, in the very marrow of our bones. This week for Fan Vid Friday, as we watch the telenovela known as the “One Direction Hiatus” (*insert WE WERE ON A BREAK gif here*) we thought we’d take it back to one of our enduring loves: the Backstreet Boys. In this trying time, we thank them for being past their days of drama and simply providing us with tunes that will never fail to bring a smile to our faces. KTBSPA. — Kim

Rose and Nine – “The One”

Sage: Unless the Backstreet Boys’ next album (WHERE IS IT) includes a song about flying the TARDIS with the parking brake on, “The One” will always reign as the band’s most Doctor Who-ish track. “I guess you were lost when I met you.” That could be the Doctor talking about any of his companions OR strike that reverse it: any of his companions talking about HIM.

Kim: This is about Rose and Nine though, OMG. She’ll be the one who will make all his sorrows undone. She’ll be the light when he feels like there’s nowhere to run. *cries forever*

Fox Mulder – “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely”

Sage: You guys remember when Dana Scully got abducted and Fox Mulder LOST HIS DAMN MIND?

Kim: Sometimes you find a song and a story arc that fit so perfectly you want to set yourself on fire. This is one of those times. TELL ME WHY CAN’T I BE WHERE YOU ARE?

Jamie and Claire – “Drowning”

Sage: We’re talking Jamie and Claire, so it might go without saying that this Backstreet fan vid is not safe for work. Unless you work as that guy in Love Actually, the second AD who gets to deliver directions to the body doubles. Related: I picture that guy behind the scenes shouting commands at the Outlander actors. (“We need to know when we’re gonna see, um, the nipples? And when we’re not.”)

Kim: “Every time I breathe I take you in and my heart beats again. Baby, I can’t help it. Keep me drowning in your love.” = “Does it ever stop? The wanting you?” This song is so Jamie and Claire it HURTS. Maybe she’s a drifter…maybe not. Also note to the Outlander showrunners: MORE SEX IN SEASON THREE PLEASE. For serious, if I don’t get a 45 minute sex scene when they are reunited, I’m burning Utica to the ground.

Jim and Pam – “Helpless When She Smiles”

Sage: Jim Halpert has the heart of the most sincere boy band love ballad. He lives in that world, so this is not a stretch. Kudos for including the post-Jinx “Hi,” which still gives me the butterflies.

Kim: If “Helpless When She Smiles” doesn’t describe the schmoopy heart eyes Jim Halpert sports every time he looks at Pam, then I know nothing. Also John Krasinski’s stupid face can get right the fuck off this planet and LET ME LIVE.

Harry Potter – “Larger Than Life”

Sage: The series did take place circa the late ’90s, so head canon accepted that there were a few copies of Millennium strewn around every house common room.

Kim: The vidder gets REAL clever with clips and lyrics in this and I love it. I love the Ron/Hermione at the Yule Ball to “Can’t you see? Can’t you see?” And the dueling during the instrumental break! Glorious.

Fan Video Friday – Hamilton #Ham4Fan

Posted by Kim and Sage

Welcome folks, to the Miranda Administration. Like everyone else who cares about ART and AMERICA, we are the trash of the thing. Hamilton is the cultural gift that keeps on giving, even as it takes and it takes and it takes – mostly, my money. The themes of the show are so universal, the hero’s journey and downfall so familiar, that all it takes is a little imagination to apply Hamilton tracks to other fandoms. The great work is hardly finished though. Where are all my Parks and Recreation tributes? What about a Doctor video to “Wait for It”? If editors are creating mash-ups like they’re running out of time, it’s only because there’s too much left to be done. Here are some of our favorites so far. –Sage

Team Cap – “Right Hand Man”

Kim: Bucky is Steve’s right hand man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know we’re going Avengers-heavy in these posts this summer but how can we NOT when there is so much good stuff out there?

Sage: “Are these the men with which I am to defend America?” – Steve, all through Civil War. I also screamed in delight when T’Challa comes flying at Bucky at “INCOMINGGGG.” I miss T’Challa.

Rey and Luke – “History Has Its Eyes On You”

Kim: I have GOOSEBUMPS. “Let me tell you what I wish I’d known, when I was young and dreamed of glory. You have no control, who lives, who dies, who tells your story.” This is SUCH a passing of the torch song and that’s exactly what is happening in the Star Wars universe right now. Are we sure Lin didn’t WRITE Hamilton as a low-key ode to Star Wars?

Sage: Lin is IN Star Wars, sooooo…I don’t think we can rule it out.

Disney Princesses – “The Schuyler Sisters”

Sage: But The Muses as the chorus, though. And Gaston pulling up on Belle while Burr pulls up on Angelica. I bet Burr also used antlers in all of his decorating. Isn’t that what everyone did in the 18th century?

Jon Snow – “Alexander Hamilton”

Kim: This IS Jon Snow’s arc though. There’s a million things he hasn’t done, just you wait. Game of Thrones lost me during season 5 but I’ve heard so many great things about season six that I’m thinking of going back. Once I have like 5 extra hours in every day, that is.

Sage: I also quit this show – mid-season 4 for me – but I’m low-key invested enough in Jon Snow’s rise to glory to read spoilers every week. He’s got the bastard/orphan thing down. OR DOES HE.

Whouffaldi – “That Would Be Enough”

Kim: BYE. *jumps off a cliff*

Sage: This is like Whouffaldi baby-fic set to music, and I hate you forever for finding this, Kim.

The Bartlet Administration – “History Has Its Eyes On You”

Kim: We watched selected episodes of The West Wing for a good portion of our day on July 4th and now I am feeling a series rewatch coming. Thus far, this is the ONLY fan video of The West Wing and Hamilton and that needs to CHANGE. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE OPTIONS? A Josh and Donna video to “Helpless”? A CJ Cregg video to “Satisfied”? An ode to Bartlet set to “One Last Time”? I AM EMO.

Sage: I’ve spent most of the last 24 hours thinking about this, and Josh Lyman is the spiritual love child of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Hear me out, don’t touch that dial: “Death doesn’t discriminate” = his personality is shaped by survivor’s guilt. But he’s as balls-to-the-wall, bull-in-a-china-shop, act-first-ask-questions-later as A. Ham. Also, “He doesn’t hold a grudge, that’s what he pays me for” is so Hamilton/Washington that it should just be added to the score.

Fan Video Friday – “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”

Posted by Kim and Sage

Welcome to Fan Vid Friday, our weekly present to you to keep you entertained during those last hours in the office before your summer weekend. Last week, I pondered in our Avengers Post as to whether or not we could fill an entire post with videos to Mulan‘s “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”. Whoops, we doggone gone and done it. This song is perfect for any sort of sprawling ensemble epic, as you will soon see. And let’s be real, who DOESN’T love the gusto with which Donny Osmond sings this? If you don’t finish this post ready to take on the Huns (what ever the Huns may be to you), then you did it wrong.

The Disney Men

Sage: Yassss, starting off TOO strong. Disney princesses get a lot of love, and rightfully so. But let’s give it up one time for all those Disney leading men who ruined for real boys. Real boys who never ONCE started singing me a love duet of which I intuitively knew the other part.

Kim: Aladdin, ruining my life since 1992. What can I say? I’m a sucker for those diamonds in the rough. Also there’s not NEARLY enough Prince Eric in this video. And finally, I have a new appreciation for Shang’s collarbones and it’s just really confusing being attracted to animated characters, okay?

Sage: Well, there’s no shortage of footage of Sherlock yelling at people, so that’s good. Also, since Molly is playing Mulan and Sherlock is Shang, this video is also honorary Sherlolly.

Kim: I love how this video is basically Sherlock telling everyone to GET ON HIS LEVEL. Also got to love the on the nose comparison of the Huns to the villains from “The Blind Banker”. (Undoubtedly the weakest episode of the series, yes? Yes.)

Star Trek

Sage: “Tranquil as a forest” = Spock. “But on fire within.” = Kirk. What makes this song so adaptable for fan videos is that the definition of masculinity (or heroism in general) is really the dealer’s choice. And the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise have all those bases covered, from intellect to brute strength to selfless leadership.

Kim: I love the use of Captain Pike in this video. He really was the shepherd of this crew of misfits as they grew towards becoming a united crew. What made Star Trek work SO WELL was that it was essentially a coming of age story for characters that we already knew. It was familiar but different all at the same time. The casting is spot on, with Chris Pine’s rogueish charm and Zach Quinto’s even-keeled intensity leading the way. I am SO READY for Star Trek: Beyond even if that is a dumb name.

PS I am still so hot for Karl Urban after AwesomeCon.

X-Men: First Class

Sage: Okay, the layers in this, because Charles wants his students to embrace their powers but also cherish their humanity. Be a MAN.

Kim: I don’t know if I will EVER be over the Cherik scene where Erik moves the satellite dish and they both CRY. This video COULD have used more Fassy, TBH. He’s so perfect, especially in First Class.

The Lord of the Rings

Sage: I’m honestly surprised some Kiwi producer hasn’t tried to peddle a LOTR musical over here. 10/10 WOULD SEE.

Kim: There was some sort of ridiculous LOTR musical in Canada and London in 2006 (thanks Wikipedia) but it never came to America because it was three and a half hours long and had a cast of 65. ANYWAY. I’m emotional over this video. I love these movies, I love the cast, I love the characters and their relationships, I LOVE IT. It is a MASTERPIECE and I need to watch it RIGHT NOW.

Also PERFECT use of Eowyn’s arc in this vid. SHE IS NO MAN.

Fan Video Friday – Avengers Edition

avengers cast

Posted by Sage & Kim

I hope you danced in a field in a flower crown to celebrate the summer solstice this week. And since the summer is officially upon us, Fan Vid Friday is BACK IN SESSION. *confetti drop*

Civil War put us back in a very Aveng-y state of mind, so we’re kicking off this round of FVFs with a tribute to Marvel’s chiseled and flawed heroes. Superpowers and super-training aside, these dopes are relatable. Check all of the following Avenger traits that apply to you: emotionally stupid; up on their high horse; hasn’t had a date in years; inability to express feelings; too excited about coffee; comes on too strong when meeting new friends; hides secret wife and children in the unidentified “country”…you get the picture.

We lovingly curated these 14 fan-created videos for you, with much gratitude and respect to the talented editors who made them. Enjoy!

Steve & Bucky – “Hallelujah”

Kim: What the actual damn hell is this? I object. Get out of my face. I can’t handle the Stucky angst for the FIRST VIDEO OF THE POST, SAGE.

Sage: Go hard or go home, Kim. Anyway, how could I resist starting off with this one? It even has that scene from Civil War when Steve uses his BARE HANDS to prevent his beloved’s helicopter from taking off. And if that happens to show off his glistening biceps to great effect, so be it.

Tony Stark – “99 Problems”

Kim: Is there a more perfect song for Tony Stark? Methinks not. Also, I don’t know if I will EVER get over how perfect RDJ is in this role? I hope Marvel thanks Jon Favreau everyday for FIGHTING for him. Seriously. I hope they send him fresh flowers every single day.

Sage: Ditto, Kim. I can’t imagine anyone else embodying Tony Stark the way that Robert does. 50% of the time, I’m not sure he’s even acting. Anyway, we have this cocky m-fer to thank for making this whole franchise even possible, so it’s no wonder Tony leads with his ego.

Avengers – “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”

Kim: Perfect song is always perfect. Seriously. I never get sick of this song. I reckon we could do an entire post with “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” videos and it would be a DAMN DELIGHT.

Sage: I just love the idea of Nick Fury singing inspirational Disney songs over a training montage, okay?

Natasha Romanoff – “Gasoline”

Sage: This song is 100% Natasha Romanoff. When we finally get our Widow movie, Halsey should curate the whole soundtrack.

Sam & Steve – “Count Me In”

Kim: It’s called chemistry and Chris Evans/Steve Rogers has it with everyone. SHIP ALL THE SHIPS.

Sage: I am a Stucky shipper to the bone, but Sam and Steve are so damn precious. Am I supposed to just ignore the fact that they have an actual rom-com meeting in Winter Soldier and then proceed to banter and stare at each other through the rest of the movie? Cause I can’t, and I won’t.

Science Bros – “The Scientist”

Kim: Do you think Mark Ruffalo has this video bookmarked in his YouTube favorites?

Sage: Kim, sometimes I wonder if Mark Ruffalo invented the term “Science Bros.” He loves his lab partner so much.

Avengers – “Some Nights”

Kim: This song is actually quite perfect for the Avengers. The constant refrain of “What do I stand for?” basically captures the struggle of many of these characters. Also that 360 shot of all the Avengers with their weapons raised is SO ICONIC it never fails to give me goosebumps.

Sage: “This is it, boys, this is war. What are we waiting for? Why don’t we break the rules already?” This video is a perfect example of how the MCU has inspired so much love for its flawed heroes, unlike that other comic book studio that shall not be named. *coughDCcough*

Fan Video Friday – Welcome Back TV!

please come back

Posted by Kim and Sage

Summer is fine. It’s the season of re-watches. Of catch-ups. Of Cat Deeley. But even with all the changes the medium has undergone over the last couple of decades, fall is still the best time to be a TV fan. We’re about to embark on the first of several premiere-heavy weeks, and the only emotion that can match our giddiness is ice cold fear that we won’t be able to keep up with it all.

The 2015 crop of pilots isn’t too promising. We’ll be lucky to get a regular timeslot or two out of it. But who cares, when so many old friends are returning? This week’s Fan Video Friday post is a tribute to the shows we’ve missed so thoroughly all summer and can’t wait to have back in front of our faces. Happy watching.

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” – How to Get Away With Murder

Sage: Like most things Lana Del Rey does, this cover is ridiculous and lacking in subtlety, which makes it an excellent choice for fan-vidding a soap-y melodrama like How To Get Away With Murder. The freshman season of the Shondaland legal thriller held back nothing…except most of the answers and all of Annaliese Keating’s motivations. I’m eager to see where Season 2 takes Professor Keating and her little murder minions, once the Lila Stangard case is put to bed.

Edit: this cover is actually by Lorde, but all opinions about Lana Del Ray still stand.

“Latch” – Jane the Virgin

Kim: No offense to Brett Dier’s Michael (he just wants a Feeling Award, you guys), but I am FIRMLY on board the S.S. Jafael and have been from the very beginning.  Yes, they’ve had their issues (mainly stemming from Rafael’s insecurities and fucked up family). Yes, they have different value systems and come from different worlds.  The odds are stacked against them, quite frankly, and their relationship will ALWAYS be hard work. But there’s no denying that when these two find themselves on the same page…magic happens. Much like Jane, I see the sparkles whenever these two share the screen. “Now I’ve got you in my space, I won’t let go of you. Got you shackled in my embrace, I’m latching on to you…”

“Worth It” – Flash and Arrow

Sage: WHEW, am I glad we picked a Flarrow ladies tribute video. Because I am not speaking to Stephen Amell right now.

Titular comic book heroes mostly come straight out of the text; it’s the development of compatriots and especially love interests that set a truly great superhero show apart from the just okay. The Flash and Arrow aren’t above criticism for how their female characters fit into the world around them (see: Season 1 Laurel and 2/3 of Season 1 Iris), but overall these ladies are serving up intelligence, sarcasm, and courage, and handily carrying their own storylines. P.S. I will always ship Barry and Felicity AND Barry and Caitlin a little bit, and nothing you do can stop me.

“Love Me Like You Do” – Nashville

Kim: In last week’s installment, we spotlighted the tortured OTP of Deacon and Rayna.  However, the reason I tune into Nashville every week is Juliette Barnes.  We’ve made it no secret that she’s our favorite.  I hate hate hated what they did to her at the end of last season (Super crazy postpartum depression pushing her marriage to the brink of destruction? Be a little more original, show.) so I am super curious how they are going to right Juliette’s path now that Hayden is back on the show full time.  Less Crazy Lady and more Bad Ass Country Diva, please and thank you.

“You and I” – The Mindy Project

Sage: OKAY, this video isn’t the newest Mindy and Danny video on the YouTubes. But think of it as capturing a particular moment in time, the hesitation right before the sparring partners figure not just that they’re crazy about each other but that it might be time to act on it, instead of boo-hooing about past loves gone wrong. Also, it’s to one of the greatest ballads in the One Direction discography and the Secret Santa hug hits right at Zayn’s legendary high note. Multi-sensory bliss.

“XO” – Sleepy Hollow

Season Two of Sleepy Hollow may have had its rough patches (HA) creatively but what never wavered was the fact that Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie are beautiful and that Abbie and Ichabod have all the eye sex and UST a viewer could want. We have a lot of changes coming in Season Three…a new showrunner, dead weight cut loose (bye Katrina and Henremy, we won’t miss you), and NOT dead weight cut loose (WHY FRANK WHY I DON’T UNDERSTAND).  But one thing will remain steadfast, no matter what: Ichabbie’s devotion to each other. Witness represent.

Also…for those of you who still care (and plenty of you do, judging by Twitter) a recap of “Tempus Fugit” IS coming your way next week.  I promise.

Fan Video Friday – A Tribute to Lady Antebellum

Posted by Kim and Sage

Happy Fan Video Friday!  It may be September and I may have had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season but everyone KNOWS that fall doesn’t kick off until the TV season starts.  Thus, summer rages on here at Head Over Feels, and once again we bring you a carefully curated collection of fan videos to while away the dwindling hours of your work day.  This week we celebrate videos featuring our favorite country trio, Lady Antebellum.  As their style ranges from the uber-angsty ballad “Need You Now” to the sweet and hopeful “Just A Kiss”, you can expect to see a wide array of OTPs represented in this one.  Why am I still talking?  There are feels to feel!

Twelve and Clara – “Need You Now”

Sage: Did you mean to search for “painfully desperate need to be together”?

Booth and Brennan – “I Run To You”

Kim: Remember how it used to be physically painful to ship Booth and Brennan, what with all their meaningful glances and tiny smiles and lingering hugs and complete disregard for personal space?  Remember how Hart Hanson and co thought we would be okay with them being together in Booth’s coma dream?  ALLOW THIS VIDEO TO REMIND YOU OF ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

Chuck and Sarah – “Just a Kiss”

Sage: Kim yesterday: “That Chuck and Sarah video. I didn’t even watch the show, and oh my god.” YEP, basically. The chemistry between Zac Levi and Yvonne Strahovski was OFF EVERY CHART; the spying was beside the point; and where is that Chuck movie we were promised, anyway?

Rose and The Doctor – “We Owned The Night”

Kim: “She was the purest beauty but not the common kind. She had a way about her that made you feel alive. And for a moment we made the world stand still. Yeah, we owned the night…”

This song was an early addition to our epic Rose and the Doctor playlist, with good reason.  There is something about the combination of the lyrics and the orchestrations that conjures up the giddy abandon that SCREAMS Rose Tyler and The Doctor. And this vid HAD to start with that scene from “Christmas Invasion”, didn’t?  *throws things* “Are you looking at those same stars?” with “The Girl in the Fireplace”? NOPE.

Noah and Allie – “Dancing Away With My Heart”

Sage: “I haven’t seen you in ages. Sometimes I find myself wondering where you are. For me you’ll always be 18, and beautiful….”

If loving The Notebook is wrong, then consider me your problematic favorite. The whole movie is just a dream, from the styling to the casting, to the locations and cinematography. This song has Noah and Allie written all over it, and I’m still feeling the pain from where the editor montaged their two memorable dances. Also, let it be known that I will never be over Rachel and Ryan as long as I live, and we’re all just going to have to deal with it. *watches MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss acceptance for the 500th time*

Flynn and Rapunzel – “Compass”

Kim: “So let your heart, sweet heart, be your compass when you’re lost and you should follow it wherever it may go. When it’s all said and done, you can walk instead of run ’cause no matter what you’ll never be alone.”

First of all, I hope you enjoyed your birthday present, Rachel.

Second of all, why has no one ever made ME a fan video for my birthday?

Thirdly, much like “We Own The Night”, “Compass” fully captures the sense of adventure that defines Tangled.  So much of the story is about discovering things for the first time and the song truly captures that, both lyrically and instrumentally.

Fourth, I really need Tangled on DVD.  If you people aren’t going to make me a fan vid, you could at least do that.

Willow and Xander – “Just a Kiss”

Sage: No shade to Willow/Oz or Willow/Tara, but when Buffy hit the airwaves, I was a timid, high school weirdo and thus put all my hopes into Willow and her fellow geek Xander. I remember that blessed prom episode like it was yesterday. May I never not be a sucker for best friend love.

Larry Stylinson – “Just a Kiss”

Kim: Leave me here to burn in the fiery pits of HELL, for I am such Larry Stylinson trash. Sorry Liam 1D management, no matter what your party line is, I will ALWAYS be trash for them and believe that they are mad for each other.  Look at them.  They are LIVING HEART EYES EMOJIS.  Yes, this a lot of footage from the early days, when they were allowed to interact.  But they STILL do it, they are just sneakier about it.  It’s horrible.  Just let them love each other, GEEZ. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to listening to “18” on repeat and reading my fanfic WHERE EVERYTHING IS HAPPY AND GOOD.

I seem to have lost my chill.

Rayna and Deacon – “As You Turn Away”

Sage: Ya’ll just can’t spell country angst without Deacon Claybourne and Rayna James. Damn if these two didn’t fight like hell to get where they are. And though I’m 10000% sure that Deacon is going to survive his liver transplant, I’m also certain that Callie Khouri is absolutely not going to LET THEM LIVE. Nashville will always be a soap, meaning that no character’s happiness will last for long. But so long as Deacon and Rayna stay hot for each other (that elevator kiss, ayyyyeeee), it’s all good.

Clarke and Bellamy – “I Run To You”

Kim: “This world keeps spinning faster into a new disaster so I run to you. I run to you, baby. And when it all starts coming undone, Baby you’re the only one I run to. I run to you.”

Is it a little on the nose to use a song with lyrics about the world spinning into disaster for The 100?  Yes, of course it is. But what makes “I Run To You” such a great song for Bellarke is the fact that it’s a song about partnership.  It’s not a song where you’re pining for someone or missing them or wondering why things just didn’t work out.  It’s a song about running towards someone knowing they will catch you.  If that’s not Clarke and Bellamy (be it romantic OR platonic), then I’m watching the show wrong.

Peter and Olivia – “Need You Now”

Sage: Fringe got too convoluted for even me and we had to break up, but the aspect of the show I was most loathe to lose was the Peter and Olivia ship. And even if you didn’t watch the series at all, this video features enough rakish Joshua Jackson smiles to make clicking that play button WELL worth it.

Cristina and Owen – “Just A Kiss”

Kim: Naturally, there were a myriad of MerDer videos set to “Need You Now” but I’m still not over Derek dying, so all of those were out.  There were just as many videos for Calzona, but Arizona is my LEAST favorite character on that show, so pass.  Thus, I shall happily spotlight Owen and Cristina, who were really an unsung OTP of Grey’s Anatomy.  I had a hard time letting go of Cristina and Burke, so I was thankful they had Cristina alone for a season.  Once Owen Hunt arrived on the scene, I was like YES.  Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd’s chemistry is off the charts and they kiss like it’s going out of style.  “Just a Kiss” fits their early relationship SO WELL.  The relationship did get a little too fraught with issues by the end (how many times are they gonna fight about kids?) but the early days?  Their slow burn was delicious.

Also, Grey’s Anatomy, can we get back to sex scenes like this one? Damn.

That’s it for this week!  With the TV season fast approaching, Fan Video Friday will be going on hiatus after next week as all of our recaps will be returning (YAY YAY YAY).  But never fear…it will never leave you for good!

Fan Video Friday – TV Nostalgia

Posted by Kim and Sage

Summer may be winding down (HOW is it August 28th?) but Fan Video Friday is still here to serve all of your dog days Procrastination needs!  This week’s post is the child of last week’s montage happy post as we pay homage to the great shows of the 90’s and the Aughts.  We are leaving out The X-FilesFriends, and The West Wing because there are fanvids a plenty for these, thanks to their availability on Netflix.  These are the shows that may not be able to fill an entire post but still hold a great place in our hearts.  Read on and enjoy all the nostalgia.  And tweet Netflix and ask them to add Will and Grace and ER, would you? We need to binge-watch them desperately.

— Kim

“Hungry Eyes” – Lois and Clark

Sage: Lois & Clark was the first show I ever truly loved, and maaaaaaaaan was it terrible. But when I watch this video, I can almost convince myself that it wasn’t, and that it could possibly stand scrutiny beyond what sophisticated critique I could offer at the age of 11. What no one can ever take away from this series is that Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher were hot together – her, even in those matronly ’90s hairdos and him, especially in those glasses. If anyone had to make the Moonlighting version of Superman, I’m glad it was them.

“Footloose” – Will and Grace

Kim: I FORGOT how much dancing there was on Will and Grace.  Jack and Grace doing “Oops I Did It Again” (how is it not in this?).  Jack shoving his son aside to do the full dance break of “Pop”.  CHER.  Kevin freaking Bacon recreating his iconic Footloose dance.  It’s all amazing.  But seriously…I need this show on Netflix.  I would binge the SHIT out of it. Will and Grace lost me a bit in the latter years when it became all about Grace wanting a baby and who they could get to make a guest star appearance, but when it was good? It was brilliant.  I need it.

“The Scientist” – ER

Sage: I kick and scream daily because E.R. isn’t on Netflix yet. I started to fall off in seasons 4 and 5 as characters piled on and quality dipped. But I don’t think it’s coincidental that my interest started to wane not long after Susan Lewis got on a train and left Chicago.  As young as I was, I didn’t know why I identified so much with Susan except that I did. Carol Hathaway is also a queen – don’t get me wrong – but there was an unnecessary amount of focus on her fragility and on her being one half of the S.S. Doug and Carol. Susan was always just doing the best that she could, whether with her patients, her friends (MARK + SUSAN 5-EVER), or her family. Warm, funny, down-to-earth…forever my County General hero.

“Sweet Dreams” – Lost

Kim: Having just finished a series re-watch of Lost (a post on my top 15 coming soon), there really isn’t a more perfect song to equal the show’s delightfully trippy nature.  This video mainly focuses on Locke/Desmond/Ben/Richard and I can’t really argue with that.  “Sweet Dreams are made of these, who am I to disagree? I travel the world and the seven seas…everybody’s looking for something.” Yep, that’s Lost in a nutshell, isn’t it?

“Long Live” – Dawson’s Creek

Sage: Wow wow wow, okay, I’m fine. As Kim pointed out to me, it’s not often that you find a Dawson’s Creek fan video that isn’t ship-oriented. This one is all about the group as a whole, and puts zero focus on the Dawson/Joey/Pacey love triangle. “Long Live” is in my…let’s say top three T. Swift songs. It’s the only track I can think of that makes me feel that instant and bittersweet nostalgia for old friends and our triumphs. This video is a work of art, from setting Jack’s coming out to “you held your head like a hero…” to using a montage of “Detention” and “The All-Nighter” for “for a moment a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world.” Part of my own adolescence will always be wrapped up in Capeside; if that goes for you too, then prepare to cry.

“I Don’t Want to Want You” – Felicity

Kim: Before Team Edward vs. Team Jacob and before Team Peeta vs. Team Gale and before Team This Guy vs. Team That Guy there was Team Ben vs. Team Noel.  Who you wanted Felicity Porter to be with said a LOT about you in the late 90’s/early Aughts.  Ben vs Noel was like fate vs. happenstance.  Me? I was ALWAYS Team Noel (which makes me happenstance? INTERESTING.)  What can I say?  I’ve always been a sucker for Scott Foley’s giant hazel eyes and I remain so to this day, given my allegiance to Jake on Scandal.  I WILL say that I was in the midst of a Felicity rewatch when it got yanked from Netflix (THE PAIN).  What team was I on as a 30-something, you might ask?  I was on Team Felicity is the WORST and both of these guys are better than this wishy-washy girl who can’t make up her mind.

Fan Video Friday – “Shut Up And Dance”

the office everybody dance

The Modcloth “New Arrivals” section is all pumpkins and aubergines; the fall premiere dates have been set; and autumn is breathing down our necks. But we’re not giving up on summer just yet. Or on Fan Video Fridays. Or on distracting you from the important work you’ve got to do at your grown-up job. (As always, you are so very welcome.)

Fittingly, this week’s theme tune is definitely a strong contender for “Song of the Summer” 2015. Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” has all the qualities you need to distill the fleeting freedom of the season down to 3:30 minutes: it’s upbeat, romantic, and has a great sense of abandon to it. It’s also the perfect track to build a multi-fandom video around, since it syncs up perfectly to every dance move ever. This is some magical shit, right here. Don’t believe me? Check out this week’s crop.

Classic TV Mash-Up

Kim: GOOD GOD I LOVE A MONTAGE.  People always complain about them at the Academy Awards, but I LIVE for them.  There is something about watching one and squealing every time you see something you love.  Jim and Pam’s Wedding! Troy and Britta! ERWill and GraceHappy Endings! The Scrubs Musical! This has em all!

Sage: Ainsley Hayes! Rose Nylund! Badger! My So-Called Life! This video digs deep. If you can’t find something in here that you love, then let us design a syllabus of TV history for you. Seriously, let us. We’d love it.

Jake and Amy – Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Kim: These two are precious, I must add this show to my binge list.

Sage: My little pumpkin pies, how I adore you. (YES, KIM, YOU DO.) Like any will-they-won’t-they couple worth watching, Amy and Jake had the maybe-this-is-more-than-I-think-it-is dance. And their banter and relationship development have just been so warm and good-hearted and fun. This song suits them as well as they suit each other.

Marvel Actors

Kim: Or, all of these assholes must be stopped because I can’t handle this.  Also I love that Hiddles is getting great buzz for the Hank Williams movie because the thought of him doing the Awards Season Red Carpet makes my heart explode with rainbows and sparkles.

Sage: Personally, I strongly believe that Mark Ruffalo should dance like Michael Jackson in more of his films. (“Matty! Matty, it’s ‘Thriller!'”) Also, the fact that this mash-up is 60% these fools shaking it in real life to 40% clips from movies says a lot about the Marvel talent stable.

Movie Mash-Up

Kim: I appreciate the liberal use of Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion.  This is another one where I squeal with joy as the video progresses with each clip.  Well, really, that’s the theme of this whole post. JOY. Also, props to ending with the MUCH under-appreciated Only You. BB RDJ, you guys.

Sage: Only You is SO MAGICAL, y’all. And it’s on my Top 15 Rom Coms list, plug plug. Anyway, is that Sister Act: 2 I spy up in here? It’s good to see good/bad movies like that, BAPSThree Amigos, and Music & Lyrics share a compilation with all the best classic movie musicals. Gotta love a nice mix of high and low culture.

Rick and Kate – Castle

Kim: Let’s talk about how Nathan Fillion is one handsome mother fucker.

Sage: Okay, let’s. The first topic is, which is better: his face or his butt? (Also, show, you listen to me: if you break up Caskett, so help me, I will not be there by the time your inevitable 15th season rolls around.)
