The real world is a minefield for fangirls. At any moment, we might see a seemingly harmless object or hear someone say a common phrase and be plunged into OTP feels. See what happens when you show a Rose/Ten fan a pair of 3D glasses or throw a “quite right, too” into a conversation. Frankly, I’m still not really comfortable around the Staples Easy button.
For this week’s playlist post, I picked five of my favorite Rose/Ten moments – the ones that threaten to pop into my head at any time and throw me into an emotional tailspin – and found the songs in the playlist that most remind me of them. Stay away from windows, my friends. This is a tough one.
“I Will Follow You Into the Dark” – Deathcab for Cutie
“Love of mine, some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind
I’ll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the ‘NO’s on their vacancy signs
If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark.”
When the Doctor realizes what he has to do to save the Earth from the impending Dalek and Cybermen invasion, he jumps into impersonal, busy Time Lord mode. He already knows what he has to do to protect Rose and he can hardly look at her. We all know that something is terribly, terribly wrong but still don’t quite comprehend just how hard Russell T. Davies is about to screw us.
Meanwhile, Rose isn’t having it. The practical thing would be for her to get as far away from danger as she can, but love ain’t practical y’all. She’s even willing to say goodbye to her parents forever. Shit is getting real.
“I made my decision a long time ago, and I am never gonna leave you.”
And HIS FACE at that part! (I spend most my time watching Ten episodes yelling, “YOUR FACE” at the screen. Kim’s seen it.) He is STRUGGLING to do the selfless thing, but he desperately wants her to stay. Ugh. Acting.
“Where You Are” – Gavin DeGraw
So let this be the chance
The only one that counts
You’re love will be my last
Until my life runs out
Until then I won’t rest
Till then I will not stop
Until I hear the words
All I need is a yes
And that I want to be where you areI
feel the same as I did from the start
Whoa, I want to be where you are
And I’m willing to get there
When I hear this song, I think about the time in between the Torchwood Institute and Bad Wolf Bay. We have no idea where the Doctor has been or what he’s been doing since he lost Rose. It’s probably too heartbreaking for us to see, since I imagine he was just trying every crazy idea he could think of to get back to her. And failing every time.
Finally, he figures out a way to at least see her one more time. He has to sacrifice a star to do it, but oh well. Boyfriends everywhere realize that they’ll never be able to make a grand gesture this romantic.
“I’m burning up a sun just to say goodbye.”
Sorry, boys.
“And I’ve, well I’ve seen a thousand things in one place
But I stopped my counting when I saw your face
Erasing memory, well I feel as though I’ve never seen a face before
Until I saw your eyes
And they’re smiling back at me through my tears
I’ve been counting all these years, oh
Suddenly the thousand things I’ve seen were nothing more than dreams of
Of you and me
You and me.”
Oh, Donna Noble. You shipped Ten and Rose even more intensely than us. She gives the Doctor a hard time about “losing” his last companion before she realizes how wounded he is. She asks him a straight question and he gives a straight answer. After all of Ten’s hedging, I was shocked at how open he was (FINALLY) about the actual nature of their relationship.
“Rose, her name was. Rose. And we were…together.”
“You Could Be Happy” – Snow Patrol
“You could be happy, I hope you are
You made me happier than I’d been by far
Somehow everything I own smells of you
And for the tiniest moment it’s all not true
Do the things that you always wanted to
Without me there to hold you back, don’t think, just do
More than anything I want to see you, girl
Take a glorious bite out of the whole world.”
It’s “Journey’s End” and Rose Tyler has done the impossible. She’s spent years in the alt-universe Torchwood designing a dimensional canon (obviously), so that…
“So I could come back…shut up.”
And then, in another “YOUR FACE” moment, Ten reacts like so:
World ending and Daleks and lost love errrrywhere, but the Doctor takes a minute to be like, “That’s my girl.” Sigh.
“I’ve been beaten down, I’ve been kicked around,
But she takes it all for me.
And I lost my faith, in my darkest days,
But she makes me want to believe.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
She is love, and she is all I need.”
Then there was that time that the Doctor was trapped in a pit with, you know, Satan – who, by the way, he doesn’t believe in. He’s facing not only certain death, but possibly the upheaval of every truth he’s ever known. And he’s got one thing left to hang on to.
“I’ve seen fake gods and bad gods and demigods and would-be gods. And out of all that, out of that whole pantheon…”
“I believe in her.”
THEIR LOVE IS FOR THE AGES, YOU GUYS. I think I actually stood up on my bed and screamed, but I’ll only admit that to the whole of the Internet. It went a little like this:

UGH ok you’ve won me over–I’ll start watching Doctor Who, it’s FINE, I don’t actually need to apply for jobs. (For the record, I have a friend who’s insisted that I watch the show, and I’ve dragged my feet because I know I’ll be debilitated by the feelings. But I’m won over by the promise of being able to yell “YOUR FACE” at my TV screen. I really only watch shows that allow me to do that.)

One of my favourite tenrose moments besides those you’ve listed? Oh boy are we both in trouble.
There’s the one in The Idiot’s Lantern, where he goes (I’m sure you’ll remember): “They took her face and just chucked her out and left her in the street? Well, as a result, that makes things simple…very simple. And do you know why? Because now there’s no power on this Earth that can stop me.” (And yes, I’ve filed all my tenrose moments into my head and oh all the quotes inside.) I can’t think of corresponding songs though, Chameleon Circuit songs are stuck in my head right now. Quite right, too. Ooh sizzle ouch.
Then of course there’s the part where Cassandra was getting into their heads and they were getting her out of each other’s heads. Plus the foxy bit. Yep no one’s gonna argue with Tennant on that.
When I really get into it though…I just love tenrose a whole lot and I could go on for ages. Sorry but this comment is going to be really long, because I’ve just read every single one of your DW posts and god the things you’ve done to me. But that’s okay. I’m just going to spend my Tuesday night curled up on my bed listening to the Doomsday theme over and over again. I flipping love these posts like the masochistic fangirl I am, and I’ve been getting kicked right in the gut of my tenrose, ninerose and even elevenrose feels…
(This is the part where I cleverly insert a really accurate gif but you have to click on the link to see it) (and even if I couldn’t find the gif you could pick it out of that doctor who gif file that I KNOW you have in your head)

Oh dear. Suffice it to say I just started watching Doctor Who, let’s see… four days ago. Made it to the end of Season 2, and being honest, am not really sure if I want to continue, because I can’t bear the sight of Ten being with ANY other companion. I literally broke down crying for nearly 10 minutes at the end of Doomsday.
Favorite Ten/Rose moment is more of a Ten moment. When he’s suspended above the pit, about to do the unthinkable, he takes a moment to say “If they get back in touch, if you talk to Rose, just tell her.. Tell her I.. Oh, she knows.” and then HE JUST FALLS!! What could have been his very last words, and he’s about to say what we all know to be true, and he doesn’t, because he knows that SHE knows. That’s the depth of their relationship; it’s a relationship where words aren’t required. Yeah sure, I was screaming my head off, yelling “JUST SAY IT ALREADY!!!” but that’s the agony of it: he doesn’t need to.

First of all WELCOME TO THE WHOVIAN FAMILY.
I too have PTSD from Doomsday. I threw the remote across the room and yelled profanities. I advise taking some time before starting Series Three. You’ll still probably have issues with Martha though. But then you get to Donna Noble (who you meet in The Runaway Bride) and she is fabulous.

I have to admit, you’re right. Watched both season 3 and 4, and though I have an incredible dislike for Martha, I was glad to see angsty Ten, in the sense that he didn’t just get over Rose and go off to find another companion. And yes, Donna WAS Fabulous. And the emotion on Tens’ face when he sees her for the first time, I nearly died from happy tears :’) Well, there’s my blurb for the day. So glad you’ve continued posting the playlist!
