Season 7, Christmas Special: The Snowmen

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate, and happy Who-mas to all of us!
BBCAmerica treated us to a Doctor Who marathon yesterday, airing most of the Christmas specials from the modern era. They didn’t include “The End of Time,” though. Maybe it’s too depressing or something.
While these event episodes aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be (“The Next Doctor”, anyone?), last night’s new installment was THE. BOMB. My emotions are too sophisticated to be put into words, so this recap will be entirely in gifs.
Spoilers ahoy.

“She fell in there and then it froze…In Franny’s dream, she’s still down there. Waiting to come back.”
“The Doctor is not kind.”
“Pond.”
*The Doctor dressed as Sherlock Holmes*
“Takes one to snow one.”
“Madam Vastra wondered if you were needing any grenades.”
“Grenades?”
“She might have said ‘help.'”
“You think I’m going to start investigating just because some bird smiled at me?”
“There’s a man called the Doctor. He lives on a cloud in the sky. And all he does all day, every day is stop all the children in the world from having bad dreams.”
*The Doctor realizes he put on his bow tie and thus is in a world-saving mood*
“Good evening. I’m a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.”
“Who said I like you?”
“I think you just did.”
“You kissed me.”
“You blushed.”
“My eyes are always front.”
“Mine aren’t.”
*New TARDIS interior*
“I like making souffles.”
“I never know why, I only know who.”
*Icy governess lady comes out of nowhere and grabs Clara*
*Doctor kisses Clara’s hand*
“If I do, will you come away with me?”
“The snowmen are growing!”
“Run. Run, you clever boy. And remember.”
“Souffle Girl. Oswin. It was her.”
“Clara. Oswin. Oswald. Watch me run.”
Who IS Oswin then? How does the Doctor know how to find her? How did Moffat manage to cheat us out of a sassy old-timey barmaid companion? Will the Great Intelligence be the big baddie for the second half of the season? And why, oh why must we wait until APRIL to find out the answer to any of these questions?!

loved your recap! reminded me of my favorite line about the grenades, or, erm, I meant maybe “help”.
Clara is going to rock his world. . . especially since he’s already met her and knows one of her futures. . . 🙁

Is Moffat okay he seems to really like killing characters and bringing them back to life and killing them again. I mean what if he kills Sherlock a second time. But I loved the episode! 😀 I thought it was brilliant and April??!!
Moffat also clearly loves having his characters fall from high distances. Ugh.

I love love love this post! Clara/Oswin is easily the most eye-pleasing of all the companions, and sassy to boot. I can’t wait until we see how she is “legitimately” brought on board. When she died in the special, I was like “oh fuck, I can’t…I just can’t…” I CAN’T WAIT!!!
Can I pose a theory? The “Great Intelligence”…Clara’s tears…seeping into the ground…reflecting like a mirror what humans think/feel…. and the Oswin of Asylum of the Daleks was a super-genius? I’m beginning to think the Great Intelligence melds with/becomes/reincarnates Clara somehow. Just an idea.
I don’t know how I feel about Clara…she’s blowing holes in my Doctor/River ship and I don’t like it. But I do think she might turn out the great intelligence as well..
I’m still not clear how River will figure in to the story now that the Ponds are gone (moment of silence). But I like Clara’s fiestiness and I think the Doctor needs that right now. I don’t think I want it to be an uber romantic relationship, but flirty is okay with me. –S
