It’s no secret that we are total trash for Clara and Twelve here at Head Over Feels. There’s already been one Fan Video Friday entirely devoted to them, after all. However that was posted before the shipper GIFT called “Last Christmas”. In light of all the Whouffaldi goodness that has been in the trailers for series 9 (those dying seal noises you heard when the new trailer was released? That was us screaming over the hug in the above gifs), we figured there was no better time than now to celebrate all the new Twelve and Clara vids out there. Come…join us in the feels. We’re not going to make it through series 9 alive.
“Shut Up and Dance With Me”
Sage: I find the way that Jenna Coleman says “Shut up” to be disgustingly adorable, so yes yes yes on this song choice. The early day Whouffaldi videos were so angsty; I’m glad we’re getting some fun, UST-heavy mash-ups now.
Kim: First of all, I’m obsessed with this song and this cover is fantastic. I love how the vidder timed so many of the “shut up and dance with me”s with Clara unabashedly throwing her arms around him. Also the look they give each other in the tunnel at the climax of “Flatline”? If there hadn’t been monsters to fight in that moment, it would have resulted in a CRUSHING kiss. You can’t tell me anything different.
“Distance”
Kim: “I’ll make sure to keep my distance…say I love you when you’re not listening. How long can we keep this up?” AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. No. This isn’t the end of “Mummy on the Orient Express” AT ALL.
Sage: Sometimes I think that I must have built the romance of the Christmas special too much in my shipper brain, but then this vidder puts the lie confession over the bridge of this song and the sleigh hug over that swelling chorus and nope, my reading is accurate.
“(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles”
Sage: The Doctor/Companion arc in series 8 was so dark and beautiful and HEALING and I will never, ever forget it. BUT, I’m ready for light and fluffy bickering best friends in the TARDIS. And according to a lot of the series 9 promo, that’s what we’re going to get.
Kim: I think David Tennant will forgive Whouffaldi for borrowing his song because this video is SO PERFECT.
“I See the Light”
Kim: Honestly, this song could have underscored the last 5 minutes of “Last Christmas” and I would have been fine with it. Because that’s what that entire episode was ABOUT…how The Doctor and Clara NEED each other. Truly. Madly. Deeply. “If she’s here, it’s crystal clear it’s where I’m meant to go. And at last I see the light and it’s like the fog has lifted. And at last I see the light and it’s like the sky is new. And it’s warm and real and bright and the world has somehow shifted. All at once everything is different…now that I see you.” Leave me here to weep.
Sage: “Deep Breath”: *Doctor can’t tell Clara and Strax apart*.
“Into The Dalek”: *Doctor doesn’t know how to describe Clara’s relationship to him*.
“Death In Heaven”: “My friend. I need her with me.”
Light: SEEN.
“Here With Me”
Sage: Sadly, this video is not to the angsty Dido masterpiece “Here With Me,” but the ship sailed on that song with Mark zipping up his sweater in Love Actually. Instead, this video uses another tune to make me forget that I violently refused to ship 11 and Clara. (And still do ONLY IN HINDSIGHT.) Excellent use of dialogue and pull quotes from the lyrics.
Kim: Like Sage, I can ONLY buy Eleven and Clara in the context of Twelve. There is something about Clara and the Doctor’s relationship NOW that in retrospect makes me go “yes, okay” in terms of Eleven. My greatest complaint with “Time of the Doctor” was that Clara’s devotion to the Doctor didn’t feel earned. WELL IT DOES NOW. This video is so deliciously angsty, I love it.
Also, I ever be over the “Oh THERE you are, Doctor” look from “Deep Breath”? The answer is no.
“True Love”
Kim: “You’re an asshole, but I love you.” I think my favorite thing about the Twelve/Clara dynamic is how they push each other’s buttons. They bring out the worst in each other but at the same time they bring out the BEST in each other. As Pink so wisely states, that’s how you know it’s true love.
Sage: Danny Pink accidentally summed it up: “You’re never done with someone when they can still make you angry.” The Doctor and Clara push all each other’s “buttons down,” and that’s how you can be sure that two people really know each other, deeply and completely.
“The Girl”
Sage: I refuse to believe that this song was not written with Whouffaldi in mind. “London eyes, Glasgow bone”? “She’s whistling, a paradox”? “THE GIRL THAT TIME FORGOT”? Also, I adore how this video asserts that it’s the things that Clara-haters dislike most about the companion that are what draws the Doctor to her and make her such an undeniably positive force in his life. So, there.
Kim: Bless Series 8 for making Clara Oswald a fully realized character. Bless the writers for not being afraid to show her ugly and “unlikable” side. Bless Jenna Coleman for breathing LIFE into her. Bless this video, which was only published a couple of weeks ago and led to me screaming “SAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!” when I found it. Bless it for illustrating Clara’s messiness as the thing that makes her irresistible to The Doctor. They are both SO screwed up…but less so when they are together.
“The Time of Our Lives”
Kim: This video was made before “Last Christmas” aired and it just has me thinking…WHAT IF EVERYTHING HAD ENDED HERE? These lyrics are SO VERY indicative of every Doctor and Companion relationship. “We have had the time of our lives. And now the page is turned, the stories we will write. We have had the time of our lives and I will not forget the faces left behind. It’s hard to walk away from the best of days. But if it has to end, I’m glad you have been my friend in the time of our lives.”
I’m fine.
ALSO…it’s so perfect that this ends with the last scene from “Death in Heaven”. WELL PLAYED.
Sage: I’m stealing a Tenth Doctor line for this one, but I know he won’t mind: “It’s been good, though, hasn’t it? All of us. All of it. Everything we did.” Yep. Yep, it has. No matter what happens.
“Feel the Light”
Sage: Okay, did this vidder slow down the “Last Christmas” elopement scene or did he really stare at her for that long? Either way, I am deceased.
Kim: REMEMBER THAT “LAST CHRISTMAS” IS AN ACTUAL EPISODE? Yeah, me too. I can’t get over the perfect timing of The Doctor holding out his hand and the “Here I go” refrain of the song kicking in. This song is ultimately all about second chances which is why it works so well with these two. “Look at you all happy! That’s rare!” “You know what’s even rarer? Second chances.” BYE.
“A Whole New World”
Kim: BRB crying forever using this song in the context of the sleigh ride aka one of the most magical moments in Doctor Who ever.
Sage: There’s a reason why some of these videos get most of their content from the special and that reason is that “Last Christmas” had “DOCTOR AND CLARA MAKE HEART EYES” emblazoned on every page of the script. Twelve’s reaction when he woke an elderly Clara will never fail to knock me out; he had so much more to show her and he wasted so much time going through his own existential crisis. Not this series, folks. He is all in.
“Human”
Sage: Oh look, it’s Christina Perri, back to terrorize us some more. This video is very Clara-focused; it tells the story of her tumultuous friendship with this Doctor from her side of things. We expect incredible things from our companions, and so does the Doctor, but Clara reminds us of the human fallibility that’s always, always there – at least when the storytelling is good.
Kim: The footage from “Flatline” (the Doctor’s victory dance and Clara smirking with the sonic) paired with “I can dance and play the part” is genius. I am forever astonished at the attention to detail that so many vidders employ. There’s got to be some sort of awards ceremony we can come up with right?
“Gravity”
Kim: “Life would be so much simpler if you liked the right people, people you’re supposed to like.” One of Clara’s main themes in Series 8 was her trying to convince herself she could live a normal life, a life that was expected of her, a life that everyone should want. It’s what the whole Danny Pink relationship was about. It’s not that Clara didn’t have feelings for Danny, because she DID. But really, her heart was never fully in it. She wanted more, she felt she deserved more, and this series was about her coming to accept that it was OKAY that she wanted more. She wants the mess she has with The Doctor…because as infuriating and ugly as it can be, it’s also wonderful.
Sage: I wasn’t familiar with this particular Coldplay song, but I’m now a fan. Very lilting and soothing and only a little bit melancholy. I like the gravity metaphor for Twelve. It’s a fact of the universe that we’re saddled with, sure. No choice in the matter. We’re all being pushed down. But I think it’s a relief for the Doctor to remember that there are forces that even Time Lords can’t avoid. Like gravity, for instance, or love.
And a Bonus Clara-Centric Video!
“I Lived”
Sage: Beautiful cinnamon roll too good for this world, too pure.
Kim: I swear to GOD, Steven Moffat, if you kill Clara Oswald this series (or any series), you won’t want to run into me in a dark alley. #ProtectClaraOswald2K15

Looking back, it’s kind of hilarious how many fans were quite vocal that Capaldi’s casting was proof of the end of romance between the Doctor and Clara. Instead, 12/Clara ends up being the most thoroughly shippable Doctor/Companion pairing since 10/Rose. By “shippable” I mean that the idea that this Doctor and this companion are romantically in love with each other and/or physically desire each other and/or are totally “doing it” offscreen is a perfectly fair, rational, reasonable conclusion to come to based on Canon.
I’ve got a video for you. It’s “Young and Beautiful” by Laura Del Ray. After “Last Christmas” this song became perfect for both of them as this video demonstrates:

Hope your feels can take it! 😉

Hello! A question, sort of a What If. What would your reaction be if Moffat actually pulled the trigger *sorry terrible analogy* and had The Doctor and Clara kiss this season?
HeadOverFeels says
First of all, would he really? I doubt it. Secondly, if he DID, we would probably keel over.
