“You must remember this…a kiss is just a kiss.”
Unless you are characters on a television show. Then a kiss can be everything.
One of the biggest reasons we tune into TV shows every week is to see the relationships between the characters. I will admit that I am a shameless shipper. I squeal and/or flail about when my favorite couple finally kisses. And before you scoff at the term “shipper”…if you ever wanted two characters to get together, guess what? You shipped them. And if you never wanted two characters to get together…why are you even watching TV?
Earlier this week our friend Angel said we should do a post about our favorite TV kisses. Since I love lists, as they will without a doubt stir up a discussion…here are my Top 5 TV kisses. Look out for Sage’s Top 5 later today.
5) Derek and Meredith, “Losing My Religion”, Grey’s Anatomy
Season Two was torture for fans of Meredith and McDreamy. Derek chose to stay in his marriage to Addison, even though he was clearly still in love with Meredith. So we had a season full of longing glances, stolen moments full of sexual tension and epic fights culminating in this moment at the Prom (yes, I know it is ridiculous, but the concept worked, so just go with it).
Meredith: Stop looking at me!
Derek: I’m not looking at you.
Meredith: You are looking at me! And you watch me and Finn has plans. I like Finn, he’s perfect for me and I’m really trying here to be happy. And I can’t breathe, I can’t BREATHE with you looking at me like that, so just STOP.
Derek: Do you think I want to look at you? Don’t you think I’d rather be looking at my wife? She doesn’t drive me crazy, she doesn’t make it impossible for me to feel normal, she doesn’t make me sick to my stomach thinking about my veterinarian touching her with his hands. Man, I would give ANYTHING not to be looking at you right now.
And then he kissed her and they had some really really hot sex right there in the exam room. It was so hot I didn’t even care that the sex was all illicit and adulterous. Sorry, Addison.
4) Rose Tyler and the Ninth Doctor, “The Parting of the Ways”, Doctor Who
“I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words…I scatter them in time and space. A message to lead myself here. I want you safe, my Doctor.” This kiss is amazing because the Doctor kisses Rose to save her after she absorbs the heart of the TARDIS and the Time Vortex to save HIM from the Daleks…which forces him to regenerate. This kiss is about love and sacrifice and how FAR The Doctor has come since the first episode. Meeting Rose Tyler changed The Doctor forever. He started out very gruff and very dark and very content to travel alone…and by the end he was willing to die for the Woman he loved. Plus, the way Eccleston (who doesn’t get enough credit for how good he was) delivers the line “I think you need a Doctor” is just hot.
3) Kate and Sawyer, “Confidence Man”, Lost
Damn, this is a hot kiss. I mean…hello tongue!! For someone who was only kissing Sawyer in exchange for information about missing asthma inhalers, Kate sure did seem to enjoy herself here. I always thought that Sawyer and Kate has WAY more chemistry than Jack and Kate ever did (Sorry Jaters. Also, your ship name is terrible). There was something purely primal about Sawyer and Kate together and all of their scenes crackled with sexual tension. Also, what makes this scene is the fact that she punches him right after the kiss, when he admits that he doesn’t have the inhalers.
Can Josh Holloway get back on my TV screen as soon as possible? I miss him.
2) Ross and Rachel, “The One Where Ross Finds Out”, Friends
Say what you want about how tiresome Ross and Rachel’s On/Off relationship got by the end of the series. In seasons one and two, their dynamic was golden. It was a brilliant move by the creative team to flip the season one dynamic of Ross pining for Rachel on its head and have Rachel pine for him for the first portion of season two. And the fight they have after Ross finds out that Rachel loves him is spectacular.
Ross: The point is I… I don’t need this right now, OK. It, it’s too late, I’m with somebody else, I’m happy. This ship has sailed.
Rachel: Yeah, what are you saying, you just sort of put away feelings or whatever the hell it was you felt for me?
Ross: Hey, I’ve been doin’ it since the ninth grade, I’ve gotten pretty damn good at it.
Rachel: Alright, fine, you go ahead and you do that, alright Ross?
Ross: Fine!
Rachel: ‘Cause I don’t need your stupid ship!
Ross: Good.
Rachel: Good. [Ross leaves] And ya know what, now I’ve got closure!
But, of course, it isn’t over. Ross comes back, Rachel throws open the doors of Central Perk and they FINALLY kiss. And ruin the lives and expectations of women all around the world while they’re at it.
1) Jeff and Annie, “Pascal’s Triangle Revisited”, Community
This kiss. THIS KISS. I could write an essay on the feelings this kiss gives me. The first time I saw this episode I screamed and texted my friend Tevy (who had loaned me the Season One DVD) “I WAS ROOTING FOR ANNIE THE WHOLE TIME!!” I’m sure he very much appreciated that text…at One O’ Clock in the Morning. Whoops. I was just really excited okay?
Seriously, everything about this kiss is amazing. I love how the first kiss is tentative, with Annie’s face afterwards basically saying “Was it okay that I did that?’. And Jeff’s face…JEFF’S FACE…you SEE something click in him. You see it all fall into place, and he gets this look of intent right before he goes in for the big kiss that makes me weak in the knees. I don’t care HOW they dealt with this kiss in the S2 premiere. In fact, I’m still a bit bitter for how it was handled. Cause that moment was NOT about Jeff craving young flesh. Nothing in his face says that. I always felt with Slater and Britta (to a lesser extent) Jeff was never fully himself. He always seemed to be trying to fit into the mold of what each woman wanted. Which is why he ran away from them after they both confessed their love at the Transfer Dance. And he has this lovely moment with Annie where suddenly everything seems to fit. Jeff dropped the sarcastic cool guy facade and became this open and vulnerable person. And that person was head over heels in love with Annie Edison. And so what else could he do but kiss her?
I just have a LOT of feelings about Jeff and Annie, guys. And I just need them to kiss (in the prime timeline, that kiss in Remedial Chaos Theory does NOT Count) in Season Four. Do you hear me, writers??

*long, dreamy sigh*
That PTR kiss will never EVER get old. Because that might have been a minute or two worth of screentime, but it just exemplified how fantastic Joel and Alison were as actors. You can really SEE in Jeff’s face that moment he realizes what it means, and Annie’s adorable uncertainty AND THEN HE JUST GOES FOR IT. And HANDS. That’s all. Ugh.
The Matt/Kaz graphic accurately sums up everything and all feelings, too. 😉

I still don’t understand how you came up with “shipper”…lol
headoverfeels says
I DIDN’T come up with it. It is a known term in the lexicon of all fandom.

I LOOOOVE watching epic kissing scenes like these. Movies and TV shows with epic love stories are my weakness. I now want to go watch all of these shows just to follow the story line of love interests. Great post!
