After Sunday night’s PeopleTV livestream of the SAG Awards red carpet, I’m almost ready to take back all the things I’ve said about E! being the worst. (Almost.) Real talk, for the first half hour or so, I didn’t think I’d be able to pull a post together. That’s how bad it was. Amateur hour hosts, split screen the whole time so you couldn’t make out details, NO CAPTIONS. I still have five or six people in my notes who I just can’t identify because they didn’t. (Shout-out to whoever was wearing that amazing green gown.) It was honestly the most stressful red carpet in the five years that I’ve been doing these posts. That said, it was kind of a good fashion night, wasn’t it? Lot of sparkles, lots of bows, some feathers, even a few one-shoulder looks. Overall it felt very tailored to my tastes, so even though it was hard to track, I was able to pull a post together in the end!
And this time, I had help from one of my favorite collaborators, Sarah. As soon as we found out Megan Mullally would be hosting the SAG Awards, I went directly to HOF Will & Grace recapper and expert, knowing she would be able to cover Megan’s looks with the love and attention they would surely deserve (and I was totally right). So we’re mixing things up a little and starting our coverage with:
The Hostess With the Mostess: Megan Mullally
Hello, fashion designers? Yes, all of you. I have a bone to pick with you. You see that someone’s on deck to host an awards show. She reaches out to you for dresses that are GUARANTEED screen time, whether it be on the red carpet or in the actual ceremony. And you still refuse to work with her?! Explain this logic to me, because I do not understand you. Luckily for us, Megan didn’t let it phase her; she just brushed these infuriating designers to the side and was like, “I got this.” And she really, REALLY, had this.
Listen, 99% of the time, I have no idea what I’m doing when I dress myself; I’m basically just out here throwing things together at the last minute and keeping my fingers crossed. But Megan? She knows what she likes, she knows what looks good on her, and good lord, the woman knows how to wear the fuck out of literally anything she puts on her body. And that’s including these three looks she bought online (teach me your pitch perfect shopping ways, Megan, show me the light). So let’s break them down. Spoiler alert: I’m insanely biased and think she looks stunning in all of them.
Red Carpet: Alexander McQueen

One of the red carpet hosts – I don’t know which one, because they literally never identified anyone and I spent the entire time asking my friends, “Am I supposed to know who that is?” every three minutes – told Megan she looked like an award, and it was such a weirdly good compliment that I have to emphatically agree with that nameless person. It’s all about the gold detailing for me; it takes what would have been a simple (yet still elegant) black dress to a whole other level. And I love that it stops at Megan’s waist; any more would have been too much, and I like an embellishment that knows its limits. Her accessories hit all the right notes for me. And her hair…watching the red carpet, I kept thinking how great of a choice it was to wear it up, but we never really got to see the back, and LOOK WHAT WE WERE MISSING THIS WHOLE TIME, YOU GUYS:

I can’t get over how amazing this style is, and how gorgeous these hair clips look against the red of Megan’s hair. I’m so sad there wasn’t a chance to really see this on the red carpet, but I am so grateful that we got a photograph of it. I’m imagining what this looks like paired with her dress, and I am overwhelmed.
Opening Monologue: Galvin London

The show begins, and Megan appears on stage in this stunning number that compelled me to shout about how she looked like the most gorgeous sparkly penny I’ve ever seen (which, in my head, was a really great compliment?). I love how she was just head to toe shine, and I love that she didn’t overwhelm it with accessories (those earrings…I am very drawn to those earrings and I’m not sure if I know why? But they work for me). I also can’t get over how great her hair looked with the dress; that kind of half pulled back look was such a beautifully subtle touch to a fire ensemble.

But then – BUT THEN – she had the sheer AUDACITY to turn around so we could get a glimpse of the back of the dress, and I’m pretty sure I would have collapsed to the floor if I wasn’t already sitting down, because I wasn’t expecting that? Like I was so entranced by sparkles all the way down to the floor that I was assuming she was just totally covered in them, but the back of this dress made the whole thing so much better. I was shook. How very dare she?
Smitty Bit/Closing the Show: Giambattista Valli

Goddammit, she looks phenomenal in red. That was almost my entire bit. Maybe it should have been my entire bit. Because goddammit, she looks phenomenal in red. This was just such a wonderfully flowy look on her. I am obsessed with the sleeves of this dress, solely for the fact that I know I could never make them work on my arms, and I’m automatically in awe of people who can; they look so great on Megan. It was difficult to get a good look at it during the show, since she spent a good portion of time sitting down in it while Smitty (SMITTY!) handed her a drink, but looking at the pictures, I’m loving the detail around her waist. Her lip color perfectly matched the dress, and I would very much like to know how to go about grabbing a pair of those earrings for myself.
All three of these looks showcased Megan’s style perfectly. She knows what she’s about, she brings it to you every time, AND she brings it to you on her own. No wonder this woman has my entire heart.
One more point to discuss, and I know this has nothing to do with the fashion, but your friendly neighborhood Will & Grace recapper can’t help herself: the fact that they brought out Smitty – a very specific character/reference – with NO EXPLANATION WHATSOEVER as to who he was and why he was there was the most delightful thing in my book. Let the uninformed be confused, let it lead them to the show, let it do whatever; I was absolutely over the moon that Megan referenced the show in an unexpected way. She could have easily just slid into the Karen voice, made a couple of jokes, and that would have been it. Honestly, it would have warmed my heart if she did do that; you know how much I love my girl. But bringing Smitty into the fold was just so out of left field, and it felt like such a wonderful gift. And Will & Grace Twitter was also a gift for producing reactionary gems like the following. Your move, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences:

BEST
Gemma Chan in Oscar de la Renta

This is exactly my shit. I love the light pink with black accent, I love the silhouette, I love the feathery sculpted fabric, I love the shoulder detail. Hair, makeup, accessories – all flawless. I’m not sure that I would love the skirt on someone else, but she has the fashion gravitas to pull it off. On her, it’s swan like and not silly.
Sandra Oh in Jenny Packham

And here I thought that the Golden Globes was going to be Sandra’s big splash of the season.

Red was pretty trendy on the carpet, but this truly stands out to me. The shade of red is to die for, and look at the sparkles. And somehow the sparkles and the silk don’t look like two different dresses slapped together; the overall effect is chic as hell.
Michelle Yeoh in Elie Saab

All I have down in my notes for this look is: GORGEOUS SPARKLES FEATHERS. What else do I even need to say?
Rachel Weisz in Givenchy

I am a real sucker for a one-shoulder and this one comes with a cute sleeve! And belt! And feathers!!
Henry Golding in Tom Ford

Would you look at this dapper motherfucker.

I don’t know if he’s wearing a pink scarf or vest to accent the rose gold hues in his jacket, but whatever that accent is, I am into it.
Lady Gaga in Dior

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present our Most Improved Player from the Golden Globes to the SAGs? This is so much better in my eyes; a much better edgy play on classic. I really love the bodice and whatever we would call the deconstructed effect at the edges.

I don’t even mind the diaper that her devotion to the Jolie Leg kept revealing.

And the jewelry’s a little intense, but what are you gonna do?
Fiona Xie in Schiaparelli

Stunning.
Betty Gilpin in Krikor Jabotian

You know me, I have to get silver sparkles into my top ten, but don’t you love this? I think the neckline is just right and I love the tiers in the skirt. I wish she had gone for a bold lip or smokey eye, but it’s a nitpick.
Patricia Clarkson in Zuhair Murad

This is all about those goddess sleeves and I am obsessed with them.
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton

I think the general consensus is that Emma’s partnership with Vuitton has been pretty lackluster overall, yes? And they’ve tried to make pants happen more than once, but these pants – PANTS, YOU GUYS – really speak to me. It’s a silhouette I might not have guessed would work on the red carpet, but I love her in this.

And you know I love that sparkly bow, one-shoulder top. Come on.
WORST
Susan Kelechi Watson in Christian Siriano

I think the skirt looks more like the lining to go under a dress than the dress itself, I’m not wild about the shade of yellow, and points deducted for the nude lip.
Alison Brie in Miu Miu

I’m always surprised when someone can prove that the limit for my love of bows does, in fact, exist. Shout-out to that thing on Alison’s back.
Danai Gurira in Ralph and Russo and Lupita Nyong’o in Vera Wang

I love these two, but I hate everything happening with their outfits.
SOPHIA BUSH WYD in Monique Lhuillier

I just feel like every single proportion is wrong here.
SUPERLATIVES
I’M NOT BORED: Amy Adams in Celine

Can you believe? This feels different for her, but she’s wearing the gown, it’s not wearing her. I do think it’s a little hard to style, she looks so bare up top, but it is DIFFERENT and I LIKE it.do think it’s a little hard to style, she looks so bare up top, but it is DIFFERENT and I LIKE it.
Can you ever just be whelmed? Rachel Brosnahan in Dior

I mean. Fine.
I’ll Drink To That: Lisa Lu

I loved seeing Lisa Lu walk the carpet with her Crazy Rich Asians cast members; I feel like they would join me in a toast to her.
You Look Like a Mermaid in That Dress: Julia Garner in Zac Posen

Sometimes Zac Posen actually comes through.
A Tale of Two Pantsuits: Glenn Close in Ralph Lauren and Gabrielle Carteris

We got not one, but two white pantsuits on the carpet, including one on the erstwhile Andrea Zuckerman, which just feels so cosmically right to me.
It’s a Hit: Melissa McCarthy

I think Melissa can be a little hit or miss, not a lot of in between, and this feels like a hit to me.
Wait, Do I Love This or Hate It? Yara Shahidi in Fendi

I really can’t tell! I mean, there’s sparkles and I spy pants. But it’s so close to the line of too much, I can’t tell which side it falls on.
She’s a Full-On Monet: Constance Wu in Oscar de la Renta

At first, I was very excited to Constance in sleek silver sparkles. But on closer look, I kind of hate it? The broach hoiking it up doesn’t work for me, and neither does the length. Again, this might be a case of my expectations being too high or too different from her personal style, but… But.
It’s Not a Joke, She’s a Legit Snack: D’Arcy Carden in Solace London

Every glimpse of D’Arcy out of her Janet costumes surprises me all over again how, yes, her body be banging. And this simple, elegant gown sheathes it perfectly and I love the clutch.
Pretty in Pink: Kirby Howell-Baptiste in Monique Lhuillier

I think that, thanks to the styling, this look is a little too princess for me to love with my whole heart, but this metallic pink is so pretty.
The Moira’s Rose’s Garden 4856: Casey Thomas Brown

I can’t tell exactly what is going on here, but it kind of looks like a pearl-encrusted wine cardigan so I’m in. You guys can picture Moira Rose drinking fruit wine in this ensemble too, right?
Honey, What’s This? What’s Happening? Michael B. Jordan in Louis Vuitton

Honestly I think it’s so wild that this is a trend now. The thing about youth culture is that I don’t understand it?
It’s a Motherf*cking Jumpsuit: Britney Young

I’m not completely sold on the vertical stripes but I’m very into the neckline/sleeve detail and you know I love me a jumpsuit.
Everyone Looks Better in Sunglasses: Sterling K. Brown

Even those of us who don’t need to look any better.
HANDSOME: Chris Pine in Ermenegildo Zegna XXX

Yeah, that’s the whole superlative. I don’t know, I just felt like it needed to be said.
What Do We Call This? Lucy Boynton in Erdem

You know, when someone is wearing two dresses?
The Buddy Comedy We All Need: Awkwafina in Mimi Plange and Laverne Cox in Zac Posen

DELIGHTFUL. Also, these ladies in red looked gorgeous:

I Can’t With This Bitch No Matter What She Wears: Kaley Cuoco
Every time. Even when she doesn’t show up.
Did you suffer through the red carpet livestream, too? How much did you love Sarah’s collab? Did we miss any of your favorite looks? Hit us up in the comments!
I always enjoy your posts! I seriously have no idea how to write about fashion. Also, “I don’t even mind the diaper that her devotion to the Jolie Leg kept revealing.” lol
yay thank you!!
Oooh I feel like we disagree a little slightly more than usual – which, I’m so proud of us for keeping it spicy – but I just need to concur with you so very hard on Patricia Clarkson. I want to stare at that dress for the rest of my life and then think about it for the rest of eternity.
Also, the Moira superlative would have made me spit out my drink if I had one right now. Love so much.
Sarah, your fervent (and well deserved) Mullally love was, as always, a delight. <3
<3 <3
Ladies, awesome work! Also, thanks to you I know I wasn’t crazy and Laverne & Julia were both wearing the same designer. I was like…how do they both have subtle polka dots if not the same maker? :p
thank you <3 and YES, good eye!!
