Bless the SAG Awards for being on a Saturday this year, my awards show hangover is much easier to deal with on a Sunday, thank you very much. This was kind of an off night in the season; not a lot of wow moments, l could only come up with seven Best looks when we usually include ten. There were lots of sleeves and textures and patterns, which was interesting, but the night was kind of whelming overall? Let’s take a look and then let me know what you thought in the comments!
BEST
Emilia Clarke
I don’t know if we’ve talked about Emilia much before but I’ve noticed she tends to go for let’s say “mature” looks on the red carpet that I don’t think always do her justice, so I basically started seal clapping when I saw her in this. I die for this bold pink and, as you may remember from the Golden Globes coverage, this neckline and skirt shape are right up my alley. Her accessories are subtle, letting the dress do most of the work, and I think the soft wavy hairstyle looks amazing. She looks age appropriate finally, and elegant and fun at the same time.
Marisa Tomei
Easily the best long-sleeved gown of the night. This style and shade of green are so flattering on her and you know I love sparkles. The belt detail really pulled it all together for me.
Amy Poehler
Look at our ginger queen, you guys. This is so good on her, it’s dramatic and yet she looks perfectly at ease and like herself. Amy can be kind of hit or miss on the red carpet but I think she knocked this one out of the park. (Apparently this was my night for subtle accessories and lowkey hairdos.)
Laura Prepon
I know, I don’t think the waist is exactly right either, but I am still here for this poetic noble land mermaid. That bodice completes me and I love the way the skirt of the dress hangs when she’s standing still or flows around her as she twirls. (We call that a ter-wully dress in my family, although I’m not sure of the spelling? due to an adorable mispronunciation of ‘twirl’ by my sister when she was four.)
Anna Faris
Am I crazy or is this so different for her? I love how sleek and elegant she looks, the short sleeves are adorable, and did you see the deep vee in the back? I’m not wild about the slit, but I’m also not really mad at it.
Naomi Watts
There were a lot of textured fabrics on the red carpet and this one was my fave. The blue is gorgeous with her complexion and I love the simplicity of the black belt. Obviously I’m into the bold lip, but I think the hair was not perfectly on point?
Helen Mirren
Take notes, ladies, this is how it’s done. She’s sparkly, sexy and classy all at the same time.
WORST
Brie Larson
When I realized this gorgeous sunflower would be a force to be reckoned with this awards season, I was nervous for her red carpet style because I was expecting like a Maggie Gyllenhaal Miu Miu vibe, which is not my vibe at all. I had no idea we’d be seeing more of a Kate Hudson Versace vibe from her. I mean. This is. She flat out told Giuliana it was the first dress she tried on that morning after not sleeping on a flight from Australia and it shows. It’s so over the top and like too many cooks in the kitchen and I can see how they tried to tie her hairstyle in but I just hate the overall effect. Also, there’s a weird red strap on the back and in my dream last night Brie explained to me that it was holding the whole look physically together so that’s why it was needed. That’s how much it stressed me out, I had dream Brie justify its existence to me.
Kate Mara
I wrote down “kate looks disgusting” in my notes and I feel so mean but I stand by it. The color is bad, the black strappy things are bad, the skirt is bad, the whole look is just bad. I just want to sit the Mara sisters down and tell them that no, they don’t have to rest on pretty, but it’s still okay to be pretty.
Eva Longoria
How does this manage to look trashy and conservative at the same time?
Alicia Vikander
Alicia, I was rooting for you. People said it looked like you were wearing an apron at the Golden Globes and I defended you. And you show up to collect your SAG Award in this like… how do I describe this? She looks like she’s the trophy wife of a Wall Street crook at a society party in an 80s movie. I can’t defend this.
Julianne Moore
No. No to the Chartreuse, no to the scratchy looking fabric, no to the bandeau, no to the straps, no to the cutouts, no to the weird trim at the cutouts, just. No.
SUPERLATIVES
Best Use of Her Platform (and I don’t mean heels!): Laverne Cox
When I tuned into the red carpet coverage on E!, the last thing I was expecting to hear was a nominee calling for Governor Snyder to resign over the water crisis in Flint, MI, but that’s just what happens when you have nominees like Laverne Cox. I thought the color of her gown was great although the structure was maybe a little confused? But I loved the Grecian goddess vibe she went for because Laverne is an actual goddess for using her platform to speak up about issues that matter to her.
Bored! I’m So Bored! Kate Winslet
Kate said on the red carpet that this was her first time wearing Armani but I genuinely feel like I’ve seen her in this at least a hundred times before. Yes, it’s flattering and yes, she looks gorgeous but also yes, I’M ASLEEP.
And readers, I apologize. I know the ship of dreams, Kate and Leo, is a big deal this awards season but my heart is just not in it. But let’s take a moment and Kim and Sage can add as many hug gifs here as they’d like before we continue on with the superlatives.
Kim: IF YOU SAY SO, MARSHMALLOW.
Best Accessory: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Look at her cute little necklace, you guys! I love a bow and I thought it was the perfect, unexpected complement to her black and white beaded gown (which, I think I’m only okay with the skirt because I love her? Let’s discuss in the comments).
They’re Called Accessories and You Need Some: Rooney Mara
I was distressed by the lack of accessories when I saw Rooney on the red carpet, especially because she went crazy with the hair again and like has she tried a bold lip ever?, but maybe that’s just because apparently SHE HAD A CAPE AND E! JUST DIDN’T SHOW IT??? I have and will put up with a lot, E! (RIP manicam, actually wait, no, rest in hellfire), but this will not stand.
PANTS IT’S PANTS YOU GUYS: Kristen Wiig
I want to let the progression of my notes tell a story:
OH MY GOD WEAR A FUCKING COLOR
that beading is no
face washed out, put on a bold lip sometime
ponytail is sigh
PANTS IT’S PANTS YOU GUYS
now i like it better but
Stay Weird: Gaby Hoffman
Bless your light, you cracked out weirdo.
I Can’t With This Zac Posen Bitch: Viola Davis
I have come to realize that I hate Zac Posen. This heavy fabric does nothing for Viola, am I gross for seeing like a vagina outline in the seams? And the kind of sleeve wraparound? I hate it. I love Viola, but I cannot with Zac Posen like ever.
Most Inoffensive: Claire Danes
This is the most I can hope for with Claire Danes. I do like her hair very much, I’m not sold on the color blocking in the dress, and I hate that bracelet, but I can stand this overall.
Yay Sparkles! Uzo Aduba
I actually don’t think this is very flattering, but I thought Uzo looked like she felt like a million bucks all night, so yay sparkles!
Worst Print: Ellie Kemper
I don’t like the color combo or basically anything about this. And okay, I would understand if she wanted to distance herself from bangs but must she with the middle part?
The Thing About Youth Culture is I Don’t Understand it: Kiernan Shipka
I like Brad Goreski a lot, I would rather see him doing interviews than Ryan Seacrest honestly, but it was hilarious to me to see him trying to talk with Kiernan like I’m not like a regular interviewer, I’m a cool interviewer. As for her gown, I wasn’t crazy for the shade of purple or the piping on the bodice, but I loved the way the skirt hanged and I thought she looked breezy and youthful.
The Niall Horan “Hey Cupcake” Award: Saoirse Ronan
So I don’t totally understand this matronly look, but I am here for this precious cupcake ad-libbing while presenting. In that accent!
Come On, Barbie, Let’s Go Party: Nicole Kidman
All I see is the Barbie challenge from Project Runway S2. And this is what she wore to represent a movie in which she plays Grace Kelly. Step it up, Nic. (P.S. I am still highkey offended by how bad the first 20 minutes of that movie were. As for the rest, I don’t know because I turned it off.)
But I Want to Love This: Rachel McAdams
I really want to love this and yet I just don’t? I can’t tell where it goes meh?
When Bad Gowns Happen to Good People: Christina Hendricks
Look at this beautiful woman in this totally undeserving gown, you guys. That heavy brocade that instantly wrinkled. That floop of fabric at the shoulder. That bustle?? Listen, her body is not problematic, that dress is, and shame on any designer not willing to branch out from sample sizes.
We Need to Talk About: Tina Fey
I did not know I needed Tina in red in my life BUT I DID — but maybe just not THIS red. Is the waist off? Is there something weird happening at her chest? Why is the top so sporty? She looks great in that color but can we get a do over maybe?
Do we even want to discuss this? Lori Petty
I Can’t With This Bitch, No Matter What She Wears: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting
Well, well, well, look who decided to show her face — and a whole lot of yikes.
I Can’t With This Bitch, No Matter What She Wears Runner-Up: Sofia Vergara
Fucking of course.
I am Aware of the Effect I Have on Women: Idris Elba
Look at this dapper motherfucker. How very dare he. Up for three awards and winner of two, Idris had a very good night, which meant we all had a very good night, thank you SAGs.
And speaking of dapper: Jacob Tremblay
What a gift this boy is, honestly. And pinstripes.
What were YOUR favorite looks at the SAG Awards? Let us know in the comments. See you for the Oscars!

WHAT THE FUCK, NICOLE KIDMAN?

Circus Tent.
Felicity Brown says
With regards to dress of Rachel McAdams, the meh is the effect she has on most dresses. Great actress, red carpet charisma vacuum.
