With a few bright exceptions, this year’s Golden Globes fashion was a full-on snoozefest. The carpet was full of celebs in playing-it-safe neutrals and prom-y ball gowns. The risks weren’t risky; Jennifer Lopez in a naked dress? Quelle surprise! Even Jennifer Lawrence, who usually rocks it, didn’t hit the mark this time. And can we PLEASE call it a day on mermaid gowns? Did I sit on the remote and accidentally change the channel to a Say Yes to the Dress marathon? Ladies, reign in your Ariel fantasies. Time for this trend to die.
Hollywood: I need you to step up your game before the Oscars. You are officially on notice.
Even a ho-hum year like this has its fashion moments. And here they are, my picks for the Best Dressed of the 2013 Golden Globes! (See Kim’s post on the ceremony here.)
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, obviously
Our hostesses with the most-esses did not disappoint on any level. Their onstage and red carpet looks were sleek and sexy, befitting the queens that they are. Tina accentuated her gorgeous teal sequins and black and white wiggle dress with soft, Lana Turner-esque waves, while Amy went with a classy side knot.
My favorite Amy look was her uuuuuber-sexy red carpet suit by Stella McCartney, who designed all of her outfits for the big show. The deep V, the perfectly cropped pant, the sparkly platform sandals. It’s heaven.
Tina was no slouch either in this L’Wren Scott number. The cut makes her body look redonk. And I know Kim is still dreaming about those shoes.
Claire Danes
A post-baby Claire Danes was looking red hot in Atelier Versace. This showstopper stood out in the crowd of cream, blush, and white. My only complaint is that the bruise-colored eye makeup was laid on a little thick. Good thing her Globe win didn’t make her cry.
Ewan McGregor
Ewan is as much of a classic heartthrob as Clooney. He’s like, Clooney’s rumpled and sexy younger brother – the one you probably shouldn’t get involved with but will anyway. And he was at his most rumpled and sexy Sunday night. Salmon Fishing in the YUMMY, amirite?
Isla Fisher
Isla Fisher did the neutral trend proud in a dazzling Reem Acra crown. The shade perfectly complements her peaches and cream coloring and the fit is the bomb.
Jodie Foster
Whether you thought Jodie’s Cecille B. DeMille acceptance speech was batty or touching or both, you have to agree that she was looking gorgeous in Armani. Chain mail chic.
Rachel Weisz
Rachel Weisz won the carpet for me in this modern and ladylike Louis Vuitton. She manages to make polka dots and bows look elegant. It’s perfect for her. No flaws to be found.
Ben Affleck
Looking dapper as hell while sticking it to the Academy.
Naomi Watts
Naomi, you are exempt from my no-mermaid rule. This Zac Posen gown’s rich color lit her up, and the train added some much-needed drama to the night.
Helen Mirren
She’s 67. SIXTY. SEVEN. YEARS. OLD. (And in Badgley Mischka, by the way.)
Kristen Bell
KBell schooled us in maternity fashion last night. She was ethereal and lovely in this lavender Jenny Packham dress, and her updo shows off the beaded neckline detail.
John Krasinski
Take a tall drink of water like J. Kras, pour him into a fancy tux, and see what becomes to all of his fangirls.
Did I miss any of your favorites? Make a case for your Globes fashion picks in the comments.
I would like to add Lady Mary and Julianne Moore to the list. And I know you think it looks like curtains, but I am kind of obsessed with Lucy Liu. Talk about being the only one who took a fashion risk! -K
I loved Tina and Amy’s outfits, too. Which is unusual because there’s almost always one that I don’t like, but they hit the mark consistently, if conservatively.
I FEEL YOU ON THE MERMAID DRESSES. I actually love the way they look when the actresses are just standing there, but as soon as they try to move, the look is ruined. You can’t walk properly in those things and seeing someone waddle in one of those dresses just kills the whole thing.
When I first saw what Rachel Weisz was wearing, my immediate thought was ‘What. Is. That?’, but after a few different viewings, I’m warming up to it. It’s got a vintage feel to it that I like.
I didn’t love KBell’s dress. And it’s not the dress itself, I just think that it’s suited for someone with a longer neck. Her head looks like it was screwed into that neckline. There’s no definition there and I found it very distracting. I love the color and the design, but since she’s so small and pregnant, I think she needed something that would lengthen her a bit more.
And I have to agree with Kim, I was kind of blown away by Lucy Liu’s dress. I can see why people think it looks like curtains, but I don’t know, it just worked for me.
Claire Danes gets my Best Dressed, though. I love the color and the cut, both are fabulous for her. She just looked stunning.
I have to admit, I don’t usually comment on the dudes since I think for the most part, they all look good, unless the tuxes are ill-fitting or out of style. I just really can’t tell the difference otherwise. I will say that I don’t go for the casual look for events like these. I love you Ewan McGregor, I do, but no, just NO. Ben and John both looked EXTREMELY dapper, especially with their gorgeous wives on their arms.
I’d like to give a special shout-out to Jessica Alba’s muppet clutch for being the new star of MY sexual nightmares.
You forgot about the Germanic silver foxes:

I will not argue that Christoph Waltz was looking fine. –S
Yeah, yeah, yeah, they’re all stunning – now on to WORST dressed. That’s where all the fun is!!! 🙂
We decided to be all about the love here. That being said, Jessica Chastain was my worst. Sigh.

For the record, John Krasinski’s appearance made me actually, literally, physically scream.
I mean, I do that anyway when I see him, but the hair and the tux hurt me on a deep level.
