Everyone welcome back our fashion blogger, Maggie. (Also it’s her blogaversary with us, so throw some glitter at her. YAY SPARKLES.) Maggie will once again be your guide through the madness that is Red Carpet Season. What were her favorite looks from the Golden Globes? Read on to find out. –Kim
The Top Ten
Taraji P. Henson
Was there really any other choice for the top of our Best Dressed list? Taraji wasn’t the only star stunning in white last night, but she was the one having the most fun working her look. (God help the man who stepped on her train as she walked up to accept her award.) Hair and makeup game strong, and I think her earrings were the best of the night. You could see a little bit of the workings of the bodice, if that makes sense? But it’s impossible to focus on such a nitpick when the fiercest woman in the room is handing out cookies and declaring that she’s waited twenty years so no, she will not be played off, thank you very much.
Kirsten Dunst
Kiki is back, y’all, and I am here for it. This black number reminded me a little bit of Rosamund Pike’s monstrosity from last year in structure, but this look is much more successful — and flattering. I think she manages to look sophisticated while baring a fair amount of fair skin, and somehow what appears to be black velvet looks light and fresh.
Zendaya
I love this color on her and I can’t get over the tiers. The fabric is a touch stiff? But it works to maintain the killer shape. She looks lovely here and the Fashion Police better only have compliments this time around.
Maggie Gyllenhaal
I know. I KNOW. This is the best I’ve seen Maggie Gyllenhaal look in a long time. I think the print works beautifully, I love the shade of yellow (in a year of some truly dour yellows) and I’m a sucker for this shoulder detail.
Laverne Cox
I freely admit to being biased here, but just look at her. You know the expression “slay”? Well, I wrote in my notes “straight up murder,” that’s how great I think she looks. She is glam for days, and I think she managed to stand out even in the sea of white with trains. I did see a few wrinkles, but again. I’m biased.
Emmy Rossum
To me, this is the perfect red carpet look. Beautifully fitted, understated red gown. Flowing locks. NECKLACE. Red lip. Done.
Rachel McAdams
Another print! This one is the tiniest bit more couch-like to me, but I love the colors and I think she’s pulling it off. Bonus points for lipstick.
Jenna Dewan-Tatum
I love the beading, the neckline, and the shape of the skirt, which I much prefer to some of the more structured prom-y dresses I saw last night. Also pockets! And btw I know we all talk about the Dewan-Tatums as relationship goals, but why/how did she let Channing out of the house with his hair like that last night??
Kate Bosworth
I’m super particular about beading (foreshadowing) and I love what’s happening here. The pink is so beautiful and the pattern created with the silver just. I love it. I think she looks overall amazing here and I hope to see more of her on the red carpet.
Bonus shot from the back, mainly because this PICTURE is stunning.
Alicia Vikander
Okay, so I know this might be controversial, but I loved this. I thought it was just out of the box enough without going full apron or anything. It’s really flattering and it has a belt! What more do you want from me? I wasn’t sure what to expect from Alicia, but I was pretty sure she would do something less traditional and I, for one, am glad she did.
Also, lounging goals.
The Bottom Five
Jennifer Lawrence
I don’t. I really can’t anymore, guys. What is this, Dior? What are we trying to do with this weird shape at the front? AND CUTOUTS? As far as styling, the necklace feels just tacked on and the hair. Is no.
Kate Hudson
I can’t even address this.
Brie Larson
Listen, I love Brie Larson. She is a delightful sunbeam. She is a talent to be reckoned with. What I did not expect her to be on the red carpet is tacky. As I mentioned, I am particular about beading/sequins, and these just look cheap, especially when combined with cutouts (I don’t hate them! They just need to be executed well!). And I mean, her hair is a miss for me and I just. I’m sad over this look. I wanted to love it.
Rooney Mara
She looks like she got mauled by the bear in The Revenant. I don’t get the braid. I don’t get the severe makeup. I mean. I think she tries really hard not to rest on pretty, but I mean. Come on. It’s okay. You’re pretty, it’s fine.
Rachel Bloom
All I see is forest green prom dress.
SUPERLATIVES
She’s Cate Fucking Blanchett, She Can Wear Whatever She Wants
I don’t really get the hairdo and is that fringe? It doesn’t even matter, she can pull anything off.
This gown is somehow both mermaidy and also a little matronly? I still think she looks lovely and I fucking love that she went to Neiman’s for size 6 options.
Please tell me if this is working or not, I can’t tell anymore: Jaimie Alexander
Look at this bold print! I can’t tell if it’s completely successful. I like the shade of green, I think it compliments her. And yes, the shape of this dress really works for me. And pockets! But like. Is this all working? I’ve been looking at it for so long that I can’t see the forest for the trees or whatever.
(Kim: SINCE YOU ASKED, I think if the deep vee had been SLIGHTLY less wide, this would have been perfection. That’s what irks me about this one. Otherwise, it’s stunning. What say you, dear readers?)
I’ll Drink to That: Helen Mirren
This broad just looks STUNNING. The gown is so flattering and that necklace is perfect.
The Jennifer Aniston “I’m Bored! I’m So Bored!” Award: Kate Winslet
If you showed me a photo of Kate Winslet in this exact gown at another awards show, I would not be surprised in the least. It’s so standard for her, so phoned in. I’m so bored!
HOWEVER. We did get these very important pictures.
Biggest Disappointment: Gina Rodriguez
I just keep expecting Gina to really wow me and she never quite does. Why navy? Why this Zac Posen blah? It reads “mature” to me when I want vibrant and fresh because that’s how I see her.
Worst Hair: Katy Perry
Worst Hair Runner-Up: Olivia Wilde
This one is a little painful because I really loved her dress, but that like rat-tail ponytail in back? Inexcusable.
They’re Called Accessories and You Need Some: Amy Schumer
When I first saw A Schu, my mind went straight to Brenda and Kelly’s matching spring formal dresses. Fair? I’m not sure. I don’t think this gown did Amy justice but you know what might have helped? Literally one accessory. She didn’t have any. What.
That’s a Lot of Look: America Ferrera and Evan Longoria (tie)
Is that lingerie? Caitriona Balfe
This is a soft, romantic look and I think it works for the most part. But seriously, is it lingerie?
Fairest of Them All: Saoirse Ronan
Again, so many white looks with cape/trains (and we’re not even getting to Lily James!) but look how elegant and pretty Saoirse is here. At first I wanted a bolder lip because I was afraid she was going to look washed out, but I think she actually got it exactly right here.
Being Yourself (Glasses or No) is Always in Style: Maura Tierney and Patricia Arquette
When Maura Tierney started her acceptance speech, my otherwise lovely husband Colin made a crack about her eyeglasses and let me tell you, I got a little shrill (“what’s wrong with fucking eyeglasses, COLIN?”). So when Patricia Arquette arrived to present, I demanded to know if her glasses were acceptable (what I’m not as sure about? That BOW, can we discuss in the comments?). Anywayyy, I love seeing ladies wear eyeglasses on the red carpet or on stage because I think people should be able to, you know, SEE. (Credit for superlative name to Stephanie Beatriz!)
Worst Illusion Netting: Joanne Froggatt
So distracting from an otherwise gorgeous look.
Always a Bridesmaid: Malin Akerman
I love Malin (RIP Trophy Wife), I like this dainty purple, and god knows I love a peplum but this reads so bridesmaid to me.
Am I Crazy for Liking This? Jane Fonda
I don’t know, I weirdly love this?? Anyone else and the gown would be wearing them, but she’s owning it.
I Can’t With This Bitch No Matter What She Wears: Kaley Cuoco–Sweeting
Every time. Even when she doesn’t show up. (P.S. Her dating Paul Blackthorne has finally killed my interest in catching up on Arrow.)
I Can’t With This Bitch No Matter What She Wears Runner-Up: Jennifer Lopez
Just, no. Absolutely not. Granted this color looked different in different lights, but I didn’t like any of them. The cape over the gown just didn’t work and you have the slit competing for attention and I just. No.
And okay, listen, I’m sorry but the men are boring. This is why we need Harry Styles to start attending every awards show (Preferably in this, which you KNOW is in his closet already). But I wanted to end on a good note with shout-out to the Internet’s Boyfriend: Oscar Isaac. Honestly, I know there were other guys I probably could have worked into this post, but why even bother when we have him??
What were YOUR favorite looks from this year’s Golden Globes? Let us know in the comments!

Pure gold! Always look forward to these award fashion write-ups! I’m confused about Rooney Mara too. She seems more like Bjork’s sister sometimes than Kate Mara’s. The floaty, shredded, dead pink jellyfish dress made me really sad. And Jane Fonda really does own that tiered clamshell design. Can’t wait for more award season coverage!!
HeadOverFeels says
She DOES seem like she’s Bjork’s sister!

I have a lot of thoughts because honestly I watch a lot of shows just for the fashion and I’ve had a subscription to Vogue for a massive portion of my life.
Super agree about your top dressers and I thought that Alicia’s dress was so pretty! I couldn’t STAND your bff Kate’s ensemble. If I were blessed to have an amazing body like hers I know I’d want to show it off but not in a thrift store looking mess from 1995! She looked tacky and boring. I actually didn’t hate Brie’s look. The color is gorgeous on her and on TV it seemed to flow and fit her well. I don’t know, I didn’t hate it.
Jaimie Alexander looked gorgeous and I loved the dress! For the briefest moment I was questioning it but after that I loved it the rest of the night and still today too! I’m sorry and I LOVE Cate Blanchett but I thought she looked a hot mess. I was curious if for some reason she and Rooney got dressed or went shopping together because I hated both of their looks!
I don’t know why Amy dresses that way! I saw Trainwreck and she has a great body but you wouldn’t know it from the dress she wore! It’s almost the Lena problem (though not as ugly). I just want someone to dress them both in things that accentuate the positives and not make them look dumpy and huge (which they aren’t). I hated Eva’s dress….especially with the belt going all the way around to an open back? WTF is up with that? Just ugh.
I know you didn’t mention her but I think I had a showchoir outfit in the mid 90’s that looked like Taylor Schilling’s ensemble. Also, why Viola? 🙁
Another pair that work together that also picked ugly dresses together are 2 of the ladies from GOT; Natalie Dormer & Emilia Clarke.
To end on a positive note I want to look as great as Bernadette Peter’s does when I’m almost 70!
